The first English Panel meeting for the year 2012 was held on 29th December 2011 at Quality Hotel, KL. It was a marathon of meetings for some of the teachers starting from 10.30am right up to 10.00pm that night.

The English Panel meeting was from 4.30pm-6.30pm. As usual, much was discussed and planned for the year 2012.

AYC - School level

Asean Youth Convention (school-level):

Venue : Dewan SriKandi and English Zone

As many as 100 Form Three Students participated in this event. It was conducted by the three students who attended the AYC, Singapore; Khairunissa Ebrawshaw, Lim Li Jia and Resheni Boystembo. They were assisted by seven other girls.
Among the activities were:
Slot 1 - The AYC Experience
Slot 2 - Sharing on the economy in SEA
Slot 3 - World Trade Game
Slot 4 - World Cafe cum Group Discussion
Slot 5 - Group Presentation

The 100 Form 3 students who participated with the 10 facilitators.

Lots of prizes and souvenirs were given away to those who won the games, the presentation, the best presenter and the facilitators who conducted the whole event.

Meal time....breakfast and lunch were provided during this whole event.

The students presented various issues about economy in SEA and their presentation were put on mahjong papers.

World Cafe....is a time where the students in groups of ten sat together to discuss on the topics given to them; all related to SEA. It was a hearty time of brain-storming.

Snip snip, cut ,cut; using limited items like scissors, newspapers, rulers...this was part of the activity in World Trade Game.

ASEAN Youth Convention

Asean Youth Convention was held in Singapore from 6th August - 10th August 2011. Three students from SMK Puteri attented this convention : Khairunissa Ebramshaw, Lim Li Jia and Resheni Boystembo. They were accompanied by a teacher; Pn Ting Sia Mooi.

The pictures below show what the students and teacher did, saw, learnt and observed throughout the whole trip there beginning from 4th August to 11th August.

The first night, we were brought to Vivo City for dinner. The students outside Vivo City.

The next day was spent at Singapore Science Center. We were there from 10.30am to 5.00pm.

After Science Center, the bus sent us to Chinatown where we did some shopping and had our dinner.

6th August....the opening ceremony of the AYC; held at Cedar Girls' School.

This is an attendance taking machine at Cedar Girls'. Students coming in and going out of the school have to swipe their MRT card to the machine. The respective class teachers are able to check their attendance. The parents also will be able to check on their children's attendance online.

Orientation time....held at Sentosa Island. Students were divided into groups. The orientation was conducted by a committee of students (about 70 of them).

A subject which definitely opened the eyes of the listeners so much so that there were many questions asked during A n Q time.

Mr Eddie Lim continued on the same subject but from a different angle.

Powerpoint such as the above and video clippings were shown to the students to educate them on the power of media and how not to be influence everything that is in the media but to analyse and study the subject first. Most powerful message as the teenagers are the group that is most easily influenced and have much access to the internet. As Mr Eddie puts it, they are the native internet users whereas those above 30 are the immigrants.

Junction 8 is a shopping mall. The students spent the whole day here preparing for their Cultural Show.

The hostel.....the delegates stayed in a bungalow at 616 Dunearn Road. There was a total of 73 foreign delegates and 9 teachers staying in the bungalow. Two teachers moved out after a night in the noisy bungalow.

Thus ends the 3rd AYC....much fun and learning for both the students and the teacher despite some disappointments and frustrations here and there.

This morning, 2.7.11 at 10.00am; teachers from the English Language Panel were given an in-house training on how to use the Language Lab by the teacher-in-charge; Pn Siti Hasanah. Pn Siti Hasanah went through the lab with the teachers step by step from opening the door, turning on the electrical points, computers, router and some teaching aids through the use of internet/dictionary and finally turning off all the switches.

Each teacher has a log book which has to be filled up by the students using the lab.

A total of 29 students and teachers visited Sunway University. Three of the students took part in the essay writing competition while the rest participated in the activities prepared by the university.

The first activity was the public speaking competition which involved six finalists. The topic was 'Shadow'. The second speech was an impromptu speech entitled 'Less is More'. Wonderful speakers.

Attractive prizes await the winners of the public speaking competition and essay writing competition.

At the lecture hall......waiting for the lectures to begin on the topic : Effective Writing Skills and Effective Oral Communication Skills.

The Puteri teachers who accompanied the students : Pn Shantini, Pn Sharifah Adilah, Pn Ting and Pn Fadzillah.

One of the speakers : Darina Yusof from HSBC. She spoke on Effective Writing Skills. A great speaker who gave lots of insights to the students on how to write effectively and be original when writing. Her great sense of confidence was shown when a student asked a personal question as to why she wears platform shoes. She lifted her left foot to show her shoe....her left foot is 6 inches shorter than her right. She gave a very touching sharing on how her mother spurred her on to success despite her physical defect.

Choral Speaking competition again!!

SMK Puteri was invited along with four other schools to compete in choral speaking competition in conjunction with the State Library's Karnival Membaca.

Karnival Membaca organized by the State Library on 23 April 2011. There were lots of activities throughout the day and one of it was Choral Speaking competition.

.....and the Choral Speakers of SMK Puteri emerged as the BEST team!!!!! Juanita (the conductress) receiving the medal and cash money of RM250 on behalf of the team.

Seremban Zone 2 District -Level Public Speaking Competition was held on 9.4.11 at SMK Shamsudin Naim, Rantau. SMK Puteri was represented by Joycelyn Ong Shee Hui of Form 5 Sigma.

Choral Speaking 2011

The girls have started their practices since February. They stayed back every Mondays to Thursdays from 2.30pm to 4.30pm under the capable leadership of Kirtana, Serena, Chandauryaa and Simran. It wasn't easy as the weather was hot most of the days, the girls had to endure scoldings from teachers and leaders and many voices went coarse and dry before the competition. The conductress, Juanita practising with the girls. The competition on 7th April at SM SMAP, Labu. 16 schools competed at this level. The girls waiting for their turn. Up on the stage, doing their very best. And the third place goes to......Team 10!!! Our hearts stopped beating a second. We couldn't believe our eyes/ears...third placing.....But we refuse to believe that we are only capable of the third placing. In our heart of hearts, we know we have done our best and performed our best.

LDP 1/2011 (ENGLISH PANEL)

The English Language Panel organized the first LDP (Latihan Dalam Perkhidmatan) for the year 2011 today (26 February 2011). It was divided into two sessions. First was a motivational talk by Mr. Heera Singh; followed by group activity based on the talk.

Mr. Heera Singh promised all the teachers a good time of learning and laughing. He was true to his word. None fell asleep and there was just so much laughter in Bilik Bestari. Despite all the laughing, we were still able to absorb the learning points which he brought across.

This was proven during the group activities where the teachers were divided into 8 groups. Each group was facilitated by an English teacher who gave the team a task based on the topic. During the group presentation, each team tried their very best to show to their fellow colleagues what they have learnt from the talk.

The LDP ended with prize giving and lunch. The best LDP ever!!!

NIE/STAR Workshop

The NIE Workshop with The Star was held on 16th November 2010. It was conducted by Ms Lyn from the Star assisted by Mr Aru. The workshop was divided to two sessions with 50 students each session.

The workshop was a blast. The students enjoyed themselves totally as they were taught how to use the newspaper in learning the English Language. The pictures below show their enjoyment, creativity and fun they had learning from Ms Lyn.

Star-NIE Mag Inc 2010

These past weeks had been a busy time for students who participated in the Star-NIE Mag Inc competition. In a group of four or five they have to create a mini magazine and video CD (optional). The mini magazine is made up of three pages which includes the cover page, a feature article and a third page which must contain any of the three elements stated under the rules and regulations like interview, statistic, agony column etc. A total of 95 mini magazines were sent to the Star. The pictures below show the creativity and effort the students put into preparing the mini magazine.

MELTA-Nottingham University Effective Writing Workshop

This workshop was held Saturday 26th June 2010 at University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, Semenyih as part of SMK Puteri English Niche Cluster Programme.

A total of 75 students attended the workshop. They were accompanied by Pn Elizabeth Matthew, Pn Vimala Devi, Pn Wong Siew Keng and Pn Hjh Fuziah.

The purpose of the workshop was to promote excellence in writing English essays amongst the upper secondary students. There were lectures and workshops conducted by two experienced lecturers; Mr Aslam Khan and Dr Gana.

Spell It Right State Challenge

RHB-NST Spell It Right State Challenge was held on 27th June 2010 at Seremban Parade. SMK Puteri was represented by Christina Paramanandan, Sharanya Suresh, Sasha and Natasha Lim. SMK Puteri was the first team to be tested as they were numbered 001 - 004.

A similar competiton was held at the school level to select the students. After the selection, the students spent every Wednesday afternoon learning, memorizing and testing each other. The training was intensified two weeks before the competition.

Choral Speaking

After months of preparation, finally the awaited day came. Sometime in April, the choral speakers took part in the district level Choral Speaking Competition. Of course, they came out first place.

A week later, they went to state level and won the first place too. On top of that, the conductor, Juanita from Form 1 was the best conductor for the state.

The next level was national, which was held in Kuantan on 5th May 2010. With so many schools from all over Malaysia, the competition was definitely stiffer. Juanita came up tops as the best conductor(national level).

The teachers who spent time to drill, grill them week after week. It is no easy task being on the Choral Speaking team. Both the teachers and students have given total commitment to their task.

The students at the national level, held in Kuantan. Though they did not grab any of the top three places, we know they have given their best. The school is with them all the way and will not allow disappointment to cripple our effort to work harder next year.

The 'cili padi'....most energetic, lively and expressive. She is always brimming with smiles. Juanita of Form 1 Sigma won the best conductor at state and national level.

The English Panel put up a little mime cum song for Teachers' Day celebration. We sang to the song 'Joni Don't Cry' and had two of our more dramatic teachers to mime the sad story.

Star NIE

A workshop on MagInc was conducted by the Star last month. It was held at Tafe College. The students who attended the workshoop were Jasreen Kaur, Priyanka Liz, Kristen Lim and Aysha. It was a most enlightening time for the students and teacher. As this will be the first time the school is participating in the MagInc Competition, we were all most eager and excited about it.

The workshop ended at 12pm. The students have learnt a lot. It will definitely be challenging to produce an excellent MagInc. But everybody can give it a try and get a Piza Hut voucher!
